Does a lifestyle product image with trust signals lift desktop conversion?

A lifestyle product image had already won on mobile. We tested it on desktop, alone and with trust signals. With trust signals, conversion rose 20.4% and revenue per visitor 22% over 19 days.

The hypothesis

By using the lifestyle product image that won on mobile, we will repeat that lift on desktop, resulting in a higher conversion rate.

On mobile, swapping the main product image for a lifestyle image lifted conversion sharply. Desktop still showed the old image, so the 2 devices did not match.

We tested the same image on desktop, and a second version that added brand logos and value props.

What we changed

We tested a lifestyle product image on desktop, with and without trust signals.

Variation A replaced the main desktop image with the lifestyle and product image used on mobile. Variation B used the same image and added trust signals: brand logos and value props.

Variation B, the lifestyle image with trust signals, won over 19 days. Conversion rose 20.4% and revenue per visitor 22%. Variation A, the image alone, did much less, with conversion up about 7% partway through.

We removed 1 unusually large order from the control before calling the test. We implemented Variation B on desktop.

What we took from it

Desktop shoppers needed proof alongside the image.

The lifestyle image alone won on mobile, but on desktop it only paid off with trust signals beside it. Desktop visitors see more of the page at once, and the brand logos gave them outside proof right next to the product.
