Does holiday lifestyle imagery lift product page conversion?

The desktop product page showed its standard hero image. During the holiday season we tested a holiday lifestyle image in its place, with nothing else changed. Conversion moved +1.2% over 12 days, short of our confidence bar.

The hypothesis

By replacing the product page hero with a holiday lifestyle image, we will make the offer feel timely to gift shoppers, resulting in a higher conversion rate.

Earlier tests on this store showed that image choice can move conversion rate. We wanted to learn which holiday images shoppers respond to during the gift season.

We planned a second variation with added seasonal graphics, but only the lifestyle image went live against the control.

What we changed

We swapped the product page hero for a holiday lifestyle image.

The control kept the standard hero image at the top of the desktop product page. The variation replaced it with a holiday lifestyle photo. Copy, price, buttons and layout stayed the same, so the image was the only change.

The result

Conversion moved +1.2% in 12 days, short of our confidence bar.

CONVERSION RATE
+1.2%

The variation led by +1.2% on conversion rate after 12 days on desktop. That gap was too small to reach our confidence bar. Halfway through, results were close to flat but slightly positive, so we let the test run another week. It never pulled clear of the control. Because the new image did no harm, the store kept it for the rest of the season.

What we would do next

Holiday shoppers here came ready to buy, so the image mattered less.

Holiday traffic on this page was mostly motivated buyers who already knew what they wanted. A new image did little to change that choice. We would retest seasonal imagery outside the peak weeks, when shoppers are still comparing options, and pair it with a layout change rather than an image swap alone.
