The hypothesis

By telling visitors the form is only 5 questions and softening the debt wording, we will lower the perceived effort, resulting in more visitors starting and finishing the form.

This test built on the round before it, which tested the 5 question message and softer debt wording as separate variations. Setting expectations up front tells visitors how much effort is ahead, so the form feels smaller before they start.

Asking for an approximate amount, with a slider that tops out at $30k, takes pressure off visitors who do not know their exact tax debt.

What we changed

We added a 5 question message, softer wording and a $30k slider.

In the control, the form showed its standard intro copy and debt slider. In the variation, the copy told visitors the form was 5 questions, the debt question asked for an approximate amount, and the slider topped out at $30k.

CONVERSION RATE
+17.2%

The variation beat the control by 17.2% over 15 days. It combined the 5 question message and the softer wording, which the round before had tested on their own. We rolled the new copy out to all traffic on this funnel.

What we took from it

Telling visitors how short the form is lowered the barrier.

A lead form about tax debt asks for something stressful. Telling visitors up front that it is only 5 questions, and letting them give an approximate amount, made starting feel low risk. On this page, that lower commitment turned into more completed forms.
