Does a sun exposure slider lift quote form completions?
Our quote form asked how much sun the home gets, using a dropdown. We replaced it with a slider running from full sun to mostly shaded. Conversion moved -52.3% over 17 days, short of our confidence bar, and we paused it.

The hypothesis
By replacing the sun exposure dropdown with a simple slider, we will reduce the effort of that step, resulting in more visitors completing the form.
The sun exposure question asked visitors to judge something most people have never measured. A dropdown made them read and compare each option before they could answer.
A slider with 4 plain stops, starting at full sun on the left, was meant to make the answer feel quick and visual.
What we changed
We replaced the sun exposure dropdown with a 4-stop slider.
Var A swapped the dropdown on the sun exposure step for a slider. It started on the left at full sun and moved through mostly sun and some shade to mostly shaded. The other steps did not change.
- Dropdown replaced with a slider
- 4 stops from full sun to mostly shaded
- Slider starts at full sun on the left
The result
Conversion moved -52.3% over 17 days, short of our confidence bar.
Completed forms came in 52.3% below the control. Traffic to this form was low, so even a drop this large did not reach our confidence bar. The slider clearly did not perform as we expected, so we paused the test after 17 days and moved to the next round.
What we would do next
The slider did not make the sun question easier to answer.
A slider asks visitors to drag and then check where they landed, which can take more effort than a single tap. We noted the idea for a retest and would try tap-friendly buttons for each sun level before returning to a slider.
