Does removing a duplicate quantity selector lift product page sales?

The mobile product page had 2 ways to pick a quantity: pack options with savings and a number selector. We tested removing the number selector. Conversion rate moved 1.3% over 8 days before the store implemented the change.

The hypothesis

By removing the numeric quantity selector and keeping only the pack options with savings, we will clear up confusion about how much to buy, resulting in more purchases.

Shoppers on the mobile product page could set quantity 2 ways. Pack options showed savings for buying more, and a separate number selector sat below them. Having both raised the question of which counted, and what happened if both were set.

Keeping only the pack options gives a single choice and puts the savings in front of every shopper.

What we changed

We removed the number selector and kept only the pack options.

In the control, the mobile product page showed pack options with savings, plus a number selector to set quantity. In the variation, the number selector was removed, so the pack options were the only way to choose how much to buy. Everything else on the page stayed the same.

Over 8 days on mobile, conversion rate moved 1.3% and revenue per visitor moved -0.4%. Neither number reached our 90% confidence bar.

The test ended early for a planned reason. The store was already updating its product pages to use the pack options alone, and that update included this change. Once it went live on the site, there was nothing left to test against.

What we would do next

Removing the extra selector did no harm in the time it ran.

The store chose to implement the single selector as part of a page update, and 8 days showed no sign of a drop. That is a weak read, not a win. With the change now live, the next step would be to watch pack size choices and average order value to see whether more shoppers pick larger packs.
